Closures for Household Chemicals: Safety, Sealing and Chemical Resistance

June 18, 2026|G&G Technical Team

Household chemicals place higher demands on a closure than cosmetics. The contents are often aggressive, sometimes flammable or irritant, and the packaging must handle safety, sealing and chemical resistance at once. This guide summarizes what to focus on.

Safety first: child-resistant closures

For many household products the law requires a child-resistant closure (CRC). This applies especially to corrosive, irritant and flammable products. When choosing, verify that the closure meets the relevant standard for the given contents.

Chemical resistance and compatibility

  • The closure material must withstand the contents: solvents, acids and bases can attack ordinary plastic
  • The sealing liner is critical: the wrong material leads to leaking and degradation
  • For flammable products consider resistance to pressure and evaporation as well
  • Always request a sample and test compatibility with your specific formulation

Closure types for household chemicals

  • Flip-top and disc-top for thick gels and washing products
  • Trigger sprayer for spray cleaners
  • Screw cap with a child-resistant feature for corrosives and concentrates
  • Pouring closure with a dosing spout for laundry detergents
