PET vs. Glass vs. Aluminium: A Comparison of Cosmetic Packaging Materials
Choosing a packaging material is a strategic decision that affects costs, logistics, brand perception, and environmental impact. The three most widely used materials in cosmetics. PET plastic, glass, and aluminium: have distinctly different properties. In this article, we compare them from all key perspectives so you can make an informed decision.
PET Plastic: Lightweight, Durable, Cost-Effective
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the most widely used plastic in the cosmetic industry. It offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio and is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. PET is transparent, lightweight, and shatter-resistant, making it a safe choice for shower use, travel cosmetics, and e-commerce.
- Weight: 5-10x lighter than glass of the same volume → lower shipping costs
- Durability: does not crack or shatter, safe for bathrooms and travel
- Price: the lowest of the compared materials
- Transparency: clear PET visually resembles glass but at a fraction of the cost
- Recyclability: PET is fully recyclable; PCR PET variants reduce the carbon footprint
- Limitation: less suitable for essential oils and aggressive formulations that may attack the plastic
Glass: Premium Appearance and Chemical Inertness
Glass remains synonymous with luxury and quality in cosmetics. It is chemically inert: it does not react with any formulation, does not allow gas permeation, and does not affect the scent or composition of the product. For perfumes, premium serums, and natural cosmetics, glass is often the only right choice.
- Chemical resistance: compatible with essential oils, alcohol-based formulations, and acids
- Barrier properties: impermeable to oxygen and moisture, providing maximum content protection
- Premium feel: the weight and coolness of glass evoke quality and luxury
- Sustainability: glass is infinitely recyclable without loss of quality
- Limitation: heavy (higher logistics costs), fragile (risk during shipping and e-commerce), more expensive
- UV protection: dark glass (amber, violet) protects sensitive ingredients from light
Aluminium: Lightweight, Recyclable, Modern
Aluminium is a material experiencing a renaissance in the cosmetic industry in recent years. It combines the lightness of plastic with the premium feel of metal and adds excellent barrier properties. Aluminium packaging is especially popular for deodorants, balms, candles, and travel cosmetics.
- Barrier: 100% protection against light, air, and moisture: no other material offers this
- Weight: significantly lighter than glass, comparable to PET
- Recyclability: aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and recycling uses only 5% of the energy compared to primary production
- Design: matte, glossy, colour-anodised surface, laser engraving: wide branding possibilities
- Durability: unbreakable, ideal for e-commerce and travel products
- Limitation: requires an internal lacquer (epoxy coating) for contact with cosmetics, higher price than PET, more limited shape options
Price Comparison (Indicative, 100 ml Bottle)
PET is the cheapest of these three materials. Glass costs roughly 3 to 5 times more than PET, and aluminium sits between them, closer to glass. The closure, label or printing, and secondary packaging must always be added to the bottle price itself. For glass, higher shipping costs and breakage insurance should also be factored in.
How to Choose the Right Material?
There is no universally best material: it depends on your product, brand, and target audience. Here is a simplified decision framework.
- Water-based formulations (toners, micellar waters, sprays) → PET or glass
- Oil-based formulations and essential oils → glass (amber or violet)
- Perfumes → glass with sprayer
- Serums and active ingredients → glass with dropper or airless PET
- Creams and balms → aluminium jar or PET jar
- Deodorants and solid products → aluminium tube or stick packaging
- Travel and e-commerce products → PET or aluminium (handle transit better than glass)
- Premium segment → glass or aluminium for luxury perception
- Budget-friendly / high volumes → PET for optimal cost
Sustainability: Which Material Is the Most Eco-Friendly?
The answer is not straightforward. Glass and aluminium are infinitely recyclable, but their production is energy-intensive. PET has a lower carbon footprint during production and shipping (thanks to its low weight), but its recycling is more limited. From a full life cycle assessment (LCA) perspective, PCR PET performs best for everyday products, and aluminium for premium segments where consumers actually recycle the packaging.
Combined Packaging: The Best of Both Worlds
In practice, many successful products combine materials: a glass bottle with an aluminium cap, a PET container with a bamboo lid, or an aluminium tube with a plastic applicator. The key is that the individual materials are easily separable for recycling.
