How to Choose the Right Closure for Your Cosmetic Product. A Complete Guide
Choosing the right closure is one of the most important decisions when developing a cosmetic product. The closure affects not only functionality but also the user experience, product shelf life, and brand perception.
1. Product Type Determines Closure Type
Every cosmetic product has specific dispensing requirements. Liquid products such as toner or micellar water require a different technology than thick creams or serums.
- Liquid products (water, toner) → fine mist sprayer with overcap
- Lotions and liquid soaps → lotion pump
- Serums and active ingredients → treatment pump (low-output pump)
- Creams and thick formulations → airless bottle
- Perfumes → perfume sprayer with aluminium collar
2. Viscosity and Compatibility
Product viscosity directly determines which dispensing mechanism will work. A product that is too thick will not dispense correctly through a standard pump, while a product that is too thin may leak in an airless system.
3. Thread Size
Standard threads for cosmetic packaging are 18/410, 20/410, 24/410, and 28/410. The number before the slash indicates the neck diameter in millimetres, and the number after the slash is the thread standard code. When selecting a closure, the thread must match the bottle.
4. When to Choose Airless?
An airless system is ideal for products sensitive to oxidation: serums with vitamin C, retinol creams, and natural cosmetics without preservatives. An airless bottle prevents the product from contacting air, extending its shelf life by up to 30%.
